One of the founder fathers of Newcastle United, John was one of the few who could have said 'I was there the day Newcastle United was formed'.

Playing only once for 'United' in their inaugural season, he had come from the 'East End' club. Indeed, his stay was pretty short after that, possibly down to the fact that he and an opposite number from the 'West End' had been banned the season before for fighting.

Perhaps not the happiest of early dressing rooms!
