In his time, David Batty was rate amongst the best combative midfielders in the county, if not Europe. That is some claim of course, when playing at a time when Keane and Vieira would grace the game.
Having established his credentials in a 6 year period at Leeds United, establishing himself in their team as at just 19, he moved to the Famous Blackburn Rovers side in 1993, winning the Premier League title (alongside a certain Alan Shearer) the following year.
And whilst he played 99 times for Newcastle following his signature in 1996, it was a case of 'what could have been' had only Kevin Keegan not left the Magpies during his first season.
There would be a runners up medal in both the League and the FA Cup during his time in Newcastle, before Ruud Gullit moved him out the door in 1998.
Batty will likely be remembered with great fondness by Newcastle United fans. Always giving 100%, a true unselfish warrior and another of those who came so close to lifting Silverware in the 90's for our great club.
