John Russell (Jackie) Bell made his debut for Newcastle United in 1957 aged just 17 scoring in a 3-0 win against Luton Town. He became something of a fixture in the team before the arrival of Jo Harvey saw him slip down the pecking order.
A rather interesting side note was that his transfer from Newcastle to Norwich was far from straight forward. Even in the early 60's the fitness and health of players was becoming more and more of a focus with basic medials and declaration of illness becoming commonplace (something that of course if common place in modern times). So when it transpired that United had 'forgotten' to mention that Jackie was diabetic a furious disagreement erupted between the clubs that eventually saw the £100k transfer fee slashed in half.
Jackie was, in his early career, touted for a full International call up. Something that regrettably on his part never did transpire.
