Nabil Bentaleb joined Newcastle United on loan, with an option to buy, in the January to 2020. He joined an injury hit Steve Bruce side who were sitting fairly comfortably mid-table at the time, looking to stay in the Premier League after losing Rafa Benitez the previous summer.

Chances for Nabil were few and far between however, and although he impressed in spells during his time at the club he never really could tie down a place ahead of Shelvey or Hayden or indeed the Longstaff brother on occasion in their breakthrough season.

Nabil left the club in the summer of 2020 with the free transfer of Jeff Hendrick widely seen as his replacement in the squad.
