John Beresford is, in many peoples books, the best Newcastle United left back of modern times. A part of Kevin Keegan's 'Entertainers' side, his bustling and forward thinking style of play made him an ideal fit. And despite not winning major honours (as we know all too well) he came close on a number of occasions with two Premier League runners up medals and one more in an FA Cup.

He was also a nearly man for his country. Called up in 1993 whilst at Newcastle he didn't make the pitch, instead having to settle for two Caps at 'B' level in 1994.

His time at Newcastle wasn't always a smooth ride, famously falling out with Keegan 'during' a game that ended with him being unceremoniously subbed off after just 25 minutes,

In the main, however, he enjoyed the privilege of being first choice in his position, forming quite a fullback pairing with Warren Barton on the other flank. The two were good club men too. Often being seen cheering on the reserves in their own time.

The highlight of his Newcastle career was probably his brace against Croatia Zagreb in the Champions League qualifiers. Whilst off the pitch, after 392 league appearances for 10 clubs (most being for NUFC), he also received an MBE for his work on the 'Show Racism the Red Card' campaign.

For anyone born after the 1960's, you'd be hard pushed to name a better left back at Newcastle United, that's for sure.
