Starting his career with Sheffield United, having been with Palace as a junior, Gary is best known for spells at Preston North End and Fulham where he played over 200 games for each.

His time at those two clubs bookended an 18 month spell at Newcastle United. In his time at the club he'd be relegated when playing just 7 games (most as a sub). In the following season he'd not be able to get either McGhee or Quinn.
