Starting his career in Scotland, Hugh quickly moved to England and played well over 100 games for Torquay United in his three year spell there.

His form on the South Coast was enough to convince the Magpies to fork our £4,500 to bring him to St James Park. But playing just two games for United meant he was quickly moved on to 2nd Division Bury for £500 just a year later.
