As one of only two players (the other being Ryan Giggs) to play in all 19 opening years of the Premier League, Sol certainly had a long and varied career.

Best known for his time at Spurs and then a huge move to Arsenal which saw effigies of the player burned outside the ground by heartbroken Tottenham supporters, he would also be capped a total of 73 times for England.

His honour roll includes:

2 Premier League (Arsenal)
4 FA Cups (3 Arsenal, 1 Portsmouth)
1 League Cup (Spurs)

He also played in a Champions League final, losing against an excellent Barcelona side, having scored the opening goal before losing 2-1 having been reduced to 10 men.

A strong and stylish centre half, Sol in his prime was a force to be reckoned with and was part of the 2003/04 'invincibles' Arsenal team that went an entire season unbeaten to lift the title.

Even later in his career he would record success. An unlikely FA Cup winner with Portsmouth as Harry Redknapp's side beat Cardiff at Wembley.

A spell at Notts County followed before he returned briefly to Arsenal primarily to 'keep us his fitness'. A single appearance in an FA Cup defeat was all he could muster however before he turned down a two year contract at Celtic to join Newcastle United on a one year deal.

Playing just 7 times and having had a long spell out with a virus, Sol would be released by Alan Pardew at the end of the season however.

Sol would go on to have a career in management, where he would be outspoken about the lack of equality in the game for black managers within the English pyramid. He would also attempt to run for a Conservative seat as a member of parliament but would fail to get the backing, whilst is a key figure in the charity 'Kids go live'
