Dwight Gayle is one of the greatest players ever to be on the list of 'too good for the Championship, not good enough for the Premier League'.
During his time at Newcastle United he scored just 11 league goals in 81 games at Premier League level. But in his one season in the Championship at the Magpies he rattled in 23 goals in 32 games in a phenomenal season that guided Newcastle straight back to the top flight.
Dwight had signed for Newcastle from Palace for a heft fee in 2016. His sole aim to fire the goals to get his new team promoted, and he did it in style. And but for a hamstring injury he'd have had a hatful more that season. His first goal for the club was in a 2-1 defeat against Huddersfield, but it would not take long for his goals to push Newcastle to the brink of promotion and the title after a poor start to the campaign.
A goal on the final day of the season therefore was fitting, having been missing with that injury for a number of weeks. His goal celebration almost coinciding with the news filtering into the ground that a certain Jack Grealish had scored at Villa Park in a result that ultimately would see Newcastle United leapfrog Brighton on the final day of the season to clinch the title for Rafa and his men. A wonderful day for everyone who was there and a rare moment of celebration during the 14 year tenure of Mike Ashley at the club.
He'd be used sparingly after that however. With Rafa and Steve Bruce giving him little in the way of playing time. And with the arrival of the Saudi millions and Eddie Howe, Dwight was shipped out in the first summer window after the takeover. The club coming to an arrangement with the player and Stoke City that would see Dwight leave with a season left on his Newcastle contract to sign a permanence two year deal with Stoke.
